Soldiers Hill
The name Soldiers Hill dates to 1854 when the colonial forces of the Australia 40th regiment were stationed there before the battle at the Eureka Stockade. Prior to that it was known as “Commanding Hill” and as early as 1851 was the site of the shepherd’s hut built by William Cross Yuille. [1]
Soldiers Hill is bounded by Railway lines to the west and south, Havelock Street and the Yarrowee River to the east and Howitt Street to the north. In 2013 the population was 2,858. [2]
Documents from the 1950s show Soldiers Hills s one of the first planned suburbs in Ballarat. The area is covered by a heritage Overlay protecting its Victorian era architectural character. [3]
