Another old identity of Ballarat, in the person of Mr Alfred J. Long, has passed away, having died at his residence, Ryan Street, Brown Hill, after a short illness. The deceased arrived in Ballarat over 61 years ago, and well remembered the Eureka Stockade riot. He died at the age of 80 years. he leaves a family of 12 sons and daughters, all grown-up and most of them married. His wife predeceased him about nine years ago. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was well attended, his remains being interred in the grave with his late wife in the New Cemetery. Messrs J.H., G.R., H., and W. Long (sons of deceased), and T. Miller acted as coffin bearers, and the pall-bearers were Messrs E. Peart, A. Buchannan, and W. H. Bulluss (sons-in-law of deceased), Jas McGrath, I. McConville, J. Stewart, F. Purcell, T. Mahon, J. McKenna, P. Egan, and J. Kay. Service at the grave was conducted by Archdeacon Allanby, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs Steve Wellington and Son.[1]
