Background
Alfred was born in Melbury Osmond, Dorset, England. He joined the 40th Regiment and was sent to Ireland where he boarded HMS Vulcan in 1852 at County Cork under the command of Colonel Thomas Valient. After arriving in Melbourne he spent 3 months in Dandenong. When stationed at Forest Creek where he was mounted and equipped for gold escort duty. [1]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
In 1854 Alfred Hurlestone was sent to Ballarat with the 40th Regiment where he helped to quell the riots at Eureka.[2]
