Background
Born c1825 Aryshire to Peter McKenzie and Agnes Connell.Married Janet Hunter in 1848. McKenzie emigrated in 1854 on the Rosina being the chief officer on this vessel. He served as an apprentice to ship building and marine architectural work, then went to sea from 1838 to 1853. He deserted the Rosina in 1854 in Melbourne.

John arrived in Ballarat around the time of Eureka.
Post 1854 Experiences
John McKenzie mined with his brother Hugh at Black Hill in 1856. He then kept a store, purchased land and combined farming with a General Store and Hotel at Mount Bolton. McKenzie then bought a timber yeard which had a frontage to Doveton Street, Ballarat. [1]
