A DOUBLE BEREAVEMENT.
DEATH OF MR. AND MRS. G. EXELL
The sad news was received here on Monday last of the deaths of Mr and Mrs George Exell, of Stockyard Hill, which had occurred on Sunday last, Mr Exell breathing his last during the day, and his widow passing away later in the evening of the same day. The late Mr Exell was a highly respected pioneer resident of the Stockyard Hill district, where he had resided for a number of years. He was 87 years of age, and had been very successful as a farmer, and breeder of dairy cattle, horses and sheep. He arrived in this State about 60 years ago,and spent some time in the Geelong district; he was also at Ballarat during the Eureka riot, and afterwards settled near Geelong. About 40 years ago he disposed of his property at the latter place, and went to Stockyard Hill, where he resided up till the time of his death. Mrs Exell, who did not survive her husband very long, was 82 years of age, and had been ailing for some rime. Much sympathy is expressed locally for the family and relatives in their sorrow. The funeral took place on Tues-day afternoon, and was well attended, the remains being interred in the Beaufort cemetery. Both coffins were of oak, and covered with floral tributes. The coffin-bearers were Messrs R. Kirkpatrick, G. Dunnett, A. Bain, W. Hose, J. Gillespie and R. Ward, and the pall-bearers were Crs. A. R. Slater, D. R. Hannah, W. H. Halpin, and Messrs C. Lewis, D. Stevenson, J. Lewis, J. R. Wotherspoon, J. A. Harris, C. Cushing, and R. O'Neil. The burial service was conducted by the Revs. A. S. Houston, C. Ross and F. McQueen June (Presbyterian).[1]
