MR. WILLIAM HENRY ELLIS.
We regret to record the death, which took place on Saturday night, of Mr William Henry Ellis, aged 87 years. The deceased gentleman was related to the late Mr John Chellew, of Avoca. Some years ago he came here and led a quiet life at the residence of Mr W. M. Chellow, where his demise took place after an illness extending over two months. During that time he received the unremitting attention of Dr Grimmer, and a trained nurse. Mr and Mrs Chellew and. their daughters, did everything possible for the venerable pioneer, and the declining years of his life were spent in congenial surroundings. Mr Ellis was born in the Parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall. He arrived in Ballarat in 1853, and was an eye-witness of the events associated with the Eureka Stockade. His photograph appears among a large group of old colonists at the Ballarat Art Gallery. Mr Ellis was one of the first to arrive on the Avoca goldfields in 1854. He was a member of the well-known firm of Taylor and Ellis, architects and contractors. Mr Taylor died several years ago. Included in the buildings erected by the firm, were 80 churches and many other fine public institu-tions and private houses. Mr Ellis was universally esteemed, and his death, is keenly regretted. His remains were interred in the Old Cemetery, Ballarat on Monday. Many old Ballarat identities were present at the graveside to pay their last tribute of respect. A shipmate of deceased's also journeyed from Melbourne to be present at the funeral. The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr H. F. Classen, at Avooa, and Messrs. Jordan and Tippett, at Ballarat.
