Tintagel
Tintagel used to be known as Trevena or 'village on a hill'. Tintagel was the name of the parish that contained Trevena and a number of other hamlets such as Bossiney, Trevena, Treven, Tregatta, Treknow, Trewarmett, Trebarwith, Trecarne and Besloe.
Tintagel is famous for its association with King Arthur and the knights of the round table. Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century wrote the history of the kings of England Historia Regum Britanniae and related the oral history that Uther Pendragon was besotted with Igraine, beautiful wife of Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall. Uther is determined to have Igraine for himself and so, with the help of the wizard Merlin, assumes the image of Gorlois and tricks his way into Gorlois’ castle at Tintagel. Geoffrey of Monmouth relates that Arthur is conceived here at Tintagel Castle.[1]
