Mr. Hanley is one of the few survivors of that historic battle, and came through the fray uninjured. His brothers, one of whom was shot in the arm, also came through the fighting safely. Background

Simon Hanley was baptised on 10 August in 1838 in County Tipperary, Ireland. [1]He arrived in Australian with his parents and eight siblings on 01 January 1852 on the Mangerton.[2] He married Mary McCarthy on 06 February 1861 at St Alipius, Ballarat East and they had four children.[3]

Hanley died in December 1916 at Rochester.[4]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Simon Hanley was too young to use a rifle so was given a pike to fight with during the Eureka Stockade. He was known to be glad he was unhurt and hurt no-one during the battle.[5]
