Richard Southee
Background
Richard Southee was born in 1804 at Bekesbourne, Kent, England to parents John Southee and Charlotte Brice. He married Martha Hatfield.[1]
Dr Southee was educated at Kings School Canterbury (1817 and 1818) before training at the London Hospital qualifying in 1824 and then onto become a Licentiate of the academy of medicine in St Petersburg 1828. He appears in the 1851 census as a surgeon in Cambridge before emigrating to Australia. Dr Southee arrived in Melbourne on 25 December 1851, and was living in Castlemaine in 1854 and Forest Creek in 1857. Richard Southee died at Marjorca on 12 June 1873, and he is buried in the Maryborough Cemetery, Victoria.[2]
- In 1826 Southee was recommended "to the patronage of the chief medical officer of the Russian army, as a gentleman highly qualified to perform his duty as a surgeon, and anxiously desirous of obtaining the approbation of his superiors" by his tutor in surgery Dr. Astley Cooper (later Sir Astley Cooper). Dr Southee went on to serve the Russian Army as a surgeon.[3]

Dr Richard Southee addressed the meeting on Agitation Hill, Castlemaine, in 1853.
Family
Richard Southee married Martha Hatfield and they had two children.
1. Martha Amelia Southee (b. 1831)[4]
2. Richard Brice (b. 1838). He was christened Richard Brice John Elistrateff Southee at the British Chaplaincy in St. Petersburg, Russia on 15th May 1846.[5]
