Although a tombstone was erected to John Egan in the Ballarat Old Cemetery he is not buried there. John Egan, drummer in 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment, died from a heart related condition, aged 21 years, under the name John Eagan, on 8 September 1860 at Victoria Barracks, Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales. He was buried in the Roman Catholic section of the burial grounds.
