Background
Michael Hanrahan was born on 08 April 1829[1] at Scalpnagown, [2] Ennis, County Clare, Ireland.[3] He was the son of Thomas Hanrahan and Bridget Heath.[4] After arriving aboard the Miles Barton on 01 January 1854 the Hanrahans reached Ballarat on 23 July 1854.[5] Michael Hanrahan married Mary McCallin at St Alipius on 14 January 1862, and the couple had seven children. [6]
Hanrahan died 04 January 1912, aged 86, [7] and is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery alongside his wife who died in February 1908.[8]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Michael Hanrahan arrived in Ballarat in July 1854. He was chosen as Captain of the Pikemen, and was said to be Peter Lalor’s right hand man. Hanrahan was in the Eureka Stockade on Saturday afternoon, but not at time of battle. Late on Saturday 02 December he led a group of Pikemen out to the Melbourne Road on 02 December 1854, with the intention of delaying the soldiers, but the soldiers travelled a different way.[9] After waiting for some time they decided the soldiers were not coming and returned to the Eureka Stockade to find the battle over.[10]
Post 1854 Experiences
Hanrahan sought compensation from the Government for his tent which was inside the Eureka Stockade, and was burnt as a result. [11]
After the Eureka Stockade Michael Hanrahan followed the gold rush to Carngham. It is not known how successful he was, but according to a letter sent to his birthplace of Scalpnagown, and dated 1855, Michael had sent 500 pounds home.[12]
Michael Hanrahan lived at Ballarat, and was recorded on the 1855 Electoral Roll, under the electoral qualification of Miner’s Right. He settled at Bungaree, on the slopes of Mt Warrenheip and started potato farming on land which is still owned by his descendants.[13]
Obituary
- "Notice Is hereby given that after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication here of application will he made to the Supreme Court or of Victoria In its Probate jurisdiction, that PROBATE of the WILL of MARY HANRAHAN late of Bungaree, in the state of Victoria, married woman, deceased, may be granted to Thomas Hanrahan and Michael Hanrahan, both of Bungaree, in the said state, farmers, the executors named in and appointed by the said will.
- Dated this third day of March, 1908
- CUTHBERT, MORROW and MUST, Ballarat proctors for the said executors.[14]
- Michael Hanrahan, sen., late of Bungaree, farmer, who died on January 4 last, by his will, dated April 13 1910 left realty £2,950 and personalty £65 to his widow and children.[15]
