Background

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

On the morning before the riot I went to the Camp and bought a licence and paid two pounds for it. My husband burned it that evening at one of the meetings. I saw Bentley's Eureka Hotel burnt down and was also present when the proclamation was read. The soldiers dropped on their knees and presented their guns art us and told the crowd to disperse, and my word did we disperse. [1]
