Background
Mary (Barrett) was born around 1825 Newcastle, County Waterford, Ireland to farmer Edward Barrett and his wife Catherine (Power). She married James/Thomas Russell, a cabinet maker, at St Francis Church, Melbourne on 4 July 1843. Mary and James produced the following children: George Russell b. 1842 Melbourne; Ellen Russell b. 1844 Melbourne (died December 1858 of a brain disorder); and Mary Russell b. 22 October 1845 (baptised the following day at St Francis Church, Melbourne). Mary’s husband James Russell died in August 1847 at Melbourne. She married her second husband, Thomas Davis on 5 February 1848 in St James Cathedral, Melbourne. [1]
