Background
Mary (Barrett) was born around 1825 Newcastle, County Waterford, Ireland to farmer Edward Barrett and his wife Catherine (Power). She married James/Thomas Russell, a cabinet maker, at St Francis Church, Melbourne on 4 July 1843. Mary and James produced the following children: George Russell b. 1842 Melbourne; Ellen Russell b. 1844 Melbourne (died December 1858 of a brain disorder); and Mary Russell b. 22 October 1845 (baptised the following day at St Francis Church, Melbourne). Mary’s husband James Russell died in August 1847 at Melbourne. She married her second husband, Thomas Davis on 5 February 1848 in St James Cathedral, Melbourne. [1]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Mary and Thomas Davis remained in Melbourne for a time, but may have moved to Ballarat by 1854 where Thomas Davis is thought to have been present at the storming of the Eureka Stockade on 3 December 1854. They had the following children: Thomas Edward Davis b. 1848 Melbourne; Elizabeth Davis b. 1850 Salt Water River; John James Davis b. 1852 Footscray; and Catherine Davis b. 1854 Ballarat (baptised 18 March 1854 at St. Alipius, Ballarat, sponsors John and Catherine McHugh. Catherine Davis died suddenly on 1 May 1876 and was buried at Buninyong). [2]
