John Tonkin
Obituary
- An old colonist of Victoria in the person of Mr John Tonkin died at Mortlake last week at tho age of i| years. He was born at Tregony (Cornwall) in 1829, and left Plymouth which he was 23 years old, in the vessel Steboneath, landing in Geelong in January 1853, after a voyage of over three months. He followed the occupation of a builder around Geelong and Highton, and was attracted to Ballarat being present at the Eureka riot. In 1859 he settled at Mortlake, and was a respected citizen of the town up to the time of his death. The deceased had a family of seven, one of the daughters being, Mrs H. J. Richmond, of Devonport.[1]
