Background

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

John Phelan was a friend of Peter Lalor and was armed with a sword in the Eureka Stockade on 03 December 1854. He tried to flee after the battle, but Trooper John Culkin stuck Phelan with the flat of his sword. Lieutenant Hall then disarmed Phelan and handcuffed him.[1]
