Background
John Lemmone (or Lemen of Lamoni) was originally from a Greek Island, and arrived in Ballarat via California. His name may have originally been ‘Lamoni’, which was changed to Lemon. [1]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
According to family tradition John Lemon was involved in the Eureka Stockade. [2]
Post 1854 Experiences
John and Mary’s son was John Lemmone, a world famous flautist, as well as friend and accompanist to Dame Nellie Melba. Lemmone paid for his first flute by panning for gold in a creek at Ballarat. [3]
In the News
- BALLARAT. - Among the relics received for the Ballarat Historical Museum in recent weeks is a revolver from the Eureka "battlefield." This was a weapon told to have been used by John Lemmone, father of the famous flautist, at the fight at the Stockade on December 3, 1854. It has been given to the museum by Mrs. J. Selover, of Ascotvale, a daughter of the pioneer. [4]
