James Heffernan

Background

James Heffernan was born 1828 the son of Roger and Ellen Heffernan. He married Kate. [1] He died at Kyneton in February 1909, aged 81 years. James Heffernan died in April 1909.[2] He is buried in Kyneton Cemetery (K 10 12).

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Heffernan took part in the defence of Eureka Stockade. He was said to have carried Peter Lalor to a place of safety.[3]

James Heffernan was a hotel keeper at Kyneton. [4]

EUREKA STOCKADE VETERAN - KYNETON, Wednesday. - Mr. James Heffernan, licensee of the Kyneton Commercial Hotel, died suddenly to-day, aged 81 years He came to Victoria in 1850, and took part in all the early gold rushes. With 80 other tributers, he worked the Ballarat Band of Hope Tribute, each of them clearing £500. He was in Heathcote in July, l853, when the Mc'lvor gold escort was held up and robbed, and was in Bendigo when the miners burnt their rights. In December, 1854, deceased took part in the historic Eureka Stockade. [5]
