DEATH OF A BALLARAT PIONEER
Mr Henry Josephs, J.P.
(From Our Own -Correspondent.)
BALLARAT, Wednesday.
Another old and respected citizen passed away at noon 'today in the person of Mr Henry Josephs, J.B. The deceased gentleman arrived in Ballarat in the early days of the diggings, and was an eye-witness of that historic fight at the Eureka Stockade. He was 79 years of age and a native of Liverpool, and leaves a widow, but. no family, to mourn his loss. The late Mr. Josephs took a deep interest in the rise and progress of Ballarat. He was a member of the Town Council, and during 1873-4 he occupied the mayoral chair. As an honorary, magistrate he fulfilled his duties with satisfaction to the public; and it is worthy of mention that for 15 years the late Mr. Josephs never once missed attending the Ballarat East Court regularly, each day at the strike of ten. He was noted for his methodical manner, and was a most philanthropic citizen. The deceased was president of the Ballarat Orphanage Asylum, the Benevolent Asylum, Ballarat Hospital, Old Colonists' Association, Water Commission, Alfred Hall commit tee, and Warrenheip, Mt. Buniuyong and Lal Lal reserves. He was deputy returning officer for over 30 years, and the vacancy on these various organisations will be indeed hard to fill. During the past three years the late Mr. Josephs had been in indifferent health, and latterly he had a paralytic stroke, from which he succumbed as stated this morning. The funeral is announced to take place to-morrow afternoon, and the remains will be interred in the Ballarat Old Cemetery.[2]
