Background
Duke was born at Newcastle on Tyne, England, and was baptised in August 1832. George Duke migrated as a six year old on the vessel Hooghly. The ship sailed to Adelaide, South Australia on 18 June 1839. George accompanied his parents, George Duke and Sarah Duke nee Burton. Duke left home at an early age and proceeded to the goldfields of Victoria and to Ballarat. He married Anne Gaynor on 08 March 1854 at Chewton near Castlemaine. [1]
George died on 21 June 1914 aged 76 years and is buried at Echuca Cemetery.[2]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
George was a miner involved in the Eureka Stockade rebellion, Ann, his wife was in the stockade during the encounter. To escape possible reprisals, Ann and George returned to the Gaynor home in Bendigo. They finally settled at Woodend where they took up farming. They had eleven children. [3]
