Edward Shanahan

Background
Edward Shanahan was born in the United States of America.[1]
Teddy Edward Shanahan arrived in Ballarat in January 1853 and started a sly grog shop only to have its contents confiscated by the police. He later opened a store, and it has been noted that Black’s Declaration of Independence was written in the store. He was recorded as still being alive in 1884. He is said to have been buried at the Creswick Cemetery although the cemetery records do not list his burial. Edward was the brother of Timothy Shanahan. [2]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Shanahan was an American storekeeper who had a tent inside the Eureka Stockade. He arrived in Ballarat in January 1853 and started up a sly grog shop, only to have the grog confiscated by the police because alcohol was banned on a goldfield. Black’s Declaration of Independence was said to be written in his store. His wife attended to some of those wounded in the storming of the stockade.[3]
