Background

David Calwell was born in the United States of America, and mentioned the Eureka Stockade several times in letters. His father was Ulster Protestant Dan Calwell, a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly for two yeas, having left Ireland in 1800 for the United States.[1]

Davis Calwell married Elizabeth Lewis on 21 October 1856, at St John's CHurch, Melbourne. The couple had twelve children. [2]

Davis Calwell's ninth child, Arthur Albert, was a police superintendent, and was the father of politician and leader of the Australian Labor Party, Arthur Calwell.[3]
