Bridget Callinan was born in County Clare in 1835. She was nineteen at the time of Eureka. With her two younger cousins, she searched among the dead and dying at the Stockade for her three brothers, Patrick, Michael and Thomas in the mayhem after the attack on the 3 December 1854. Her brother Michael had two bullets in his thigh and her brother Patrick had two bayonet wounds, one between his shoulders and one under his left breast. According to family history Bridget confronted the heavily armed police and soldiers causing a diversion which allowed her two brothers to escape with the assistance of her cousins.[1]
