Boorondara Cemetery was established in December 1858 and was the first landscaped cemetery in Australia. The first burial took place on 12 March 1859. The cemetery is divided into sections allocated to various religions with size of sections being determined by local population ratio gained from the 1857 Census.

Kathleen Gervasoni was involved with transcribing tombstone inscriptions at Boorondara Cemetery during the 1970s, and armed her three daughters with chalk to assist in the process.
