...The proudest men in Ballarat were the gold fields veterans who were associated with the historic fight at the Eureka Stockade, and were entitled to don the blue ribbon provided for the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the event. A substantial majority of them were local men, but others had come hundreds of miles to renew old associations of to shake a hand which, like their own had turned a windlass or filled a bucket in "the roaring days of 50 years ago. ...[1]
