Background

William Shields (Shiels) was born at Markinch, Fife, Scotland in 1815. His father was David Shiels. [1], where he worked as a millright, machine maker and engineer. He sailed to Australia in steerage class on the Agenoria with his wife, Elizabeth Burrell (Birrel) and their children in 1849. He hade some success prospecting for gold on the Mt Alexander diggings, and worked as a grocer, freehold store keeper, Licensed Victualler, then Hotel Proprietor and Publican at the James Watt Hotel in Spencer Street, Melbourne.[2]

One of Elizabeth Shields nieces, Agnes Greig (late Agnes Franks) sailed on the same ship.
