William Shields (Shiels) was born at Markinch, Fife, Scotland where he wored as a millright, machine maker and engineer. He sailed to Australia in steerage class on the Agenoria with his wife, Elizabeth Burrell (Birrel) and their children in 1849. He hade some success prospecting for gold on the Mt Alexander diggings, and worked as a grocer, freehold store keeper, Licensed Victualler, then Hotel Proprietor and Publican at the James Watt Hotel in Spencer Street, Melbourne.
