Background

Dr William McCrae was born in 1814 at County Tyrone, Ireland. He moved to London at the age of 13 and was apprenticed to his uncle in the medical profession. He left Tasmania and went to the Camp at Castlemaine in 1852. His first appointment WAS ON 19 mARCH 1852, and he was a member of the Castlemaine Medical Associtation in 1853. Dr McCrae became Colonial Surgeon on 04 October 1853, and Chief Medical Officer, Melbourne on 05 October 1853.[1]

Dr William McCrae (M.R.S.C. Eng 1833)[2] was a former naval surgeon who had served with Charles Hotham. In 1854 he was the Chief Health Officer in Victoria.[3]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

On 30 October 1854 Dr William McCrae was a member of the Board of Enquiry into James Scobie’s murder.[4]

Post 1854 Experiences

The Star on 11 September 1856 published a report of the dissolution between William McCrea, Simeon Davey and William Irwin of the Star Hotel, Main Road. The partnership was dissolved on 23 August 1856 and Mr Irwin was to carry on the business of the Star Hotel. [5]

Dr William McCrea was the first to be listed on the Medical Register of Victoria.[6]

He died on 19 March 1899. [7]
