- One of the survivors of the Eureka Stockade trouble at Ballarat, William Hartley, applied for an old-age pension at Gordon, V., recently, but it was found that he was not a naturalised British subject. Hartley explained he had not become naturalised as he was a native of the United States and wished to remain loyal to the Stars and. 'Stripes. He had been in communication with the U.S. consul, but was informed that the United States Government made no provision for her subjects abroad. Unfortunately for him, he has to be three years a naturalised subject before he can receive a pension from the Australian. Government. He is now 80 years of age.[1]
