Thomas Commins

Obituary

Thomas Commíns, lately of Beneree, aged 60. He arrived in Victoria in 1853, went to the diggings and became manager of the Working Miners' Claim at Sebastopol Hill, Ballarat. He took some part in the Ballarat riot of 1854, when the miners of that goldfield endeavored to resist by force the collection of what was deemed harassing and unjust monthly licensing fees. In the old days Mr. Commins was an active politician and loyal adherent and supporter of Peter Lalor, and was one of those who first introduced Mr. Gillies, the present Premier of Victoria, to the miners of Ballarat. He came from Ballarat to the Lachlan rush and from there to the Wentworth (Lucknow) in 1864. He selected some land at Beneree shortly after this, which he farmed ever since, and where he remained until his death.
