Eureka Day—the anniversary of the day when the one battle against the Crown forces was fought in Australian— was celebrated on Saturday by a gathering on the reserve, and despite the unseasonable weather, the function was well attended. The site of the Stockade has been greatly beautified by the Ideal committee of enthusiasts. The gathering included, amongst others, Mr Sydney Mason, who was in Ballarat four years prior to the “riot,” who was 16 years old when the trouble occurred, and who confessed with some pride that he “carried a pike’’ on that day. He was at Little Bendigo when the trouble broke out, but, with others, rushed across country to be in the fray. ... [1]
