Edward Hargreaves discovered gold at Summerhill Creek on 12 February 1851. After the discovery many thousands rushed to the area and the town of Sofala was born. When the alluvial gold ran out, quartz reef mining started. Sofala opposed the gold licensing system in New South Wales in the early 1850s.[1]
