:Mr. R. M. Serjeant, an ex-member of the Victorian Assembly, died at [[Ballarat]] on Saturday at the age of 73. He was born at Callington ([[Cornwall]]), and arrived in South Australia in 1850. After working in this State as a copper miner for two years he went to the Ballarat goldfields, and was present at the [[Eureka Stockade]] riot. Mr. Serjeant was associated with mining at Ballarat till the day of his death, and he was first elected to Parliament by his brother workers in 1859, when the present Speaker (Mr. Duncan Gillies) was one of the defeated candidates.<ref>Adelaide Advertiser,,  29 October 1902.</ref>

Background

Serjeant was born at Callingtron,[1] Cornwall, England, in 1828. He was the son of surgeon in the Royal Marines. He arrived in Australia in 1849, and he first dug for gold at Adelaide Gully, Bendigo. [2]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Serjeant was an eyewitness to the Eureka Stockade.[3]

Post 1854 Experiences

In 1855 Serjeant was the first to sink through basalt on the Gravel Pits opening up the riches of Ballarat’s deep leads. He was Manager of the Band of Hope and Albion, with a house in Darling Street, Ballarat.

He was elected to the District of Ballarat West in 1859.[4]

In the 1880’s Serjeant was living at Yarrowee Pde, Ballarat.[5]

Obituary

Mr. R. M. Serjeant, an ex-member of the Victorian Assembly, died at Ballarat on Saturday at the age of 73. He was born at Callington (Cornwall), and arrived in South Australia in 1850. After working in this State as a copper miner for two years he went to the Ballarat goldfields, and was present at the Eureka Stockade riot. Mr. Serjeant was associated with mining at Ballarat till the day of his death, and he was first elected to Parliament by his brother workers in 1859, when the present Speaker (Mr. Duncan Gillies) was one of the defeated candidates.[6]
