Background
Serjeant was born in Cornwall, England, in 1828. He was the son of surgeon in the Royal Marines. He arrived in Australia in 1849, and he first dug for gold at Adelaide Gully, Bendigo. [1]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Serjeant was an eyewitness to the Eureka Stockade.[2]
Post 1854 Experiences
In 1855 Serjeant was the first to sink through basalt on the Gravel Pits opening up the riches of Ballarat’s deep leads. He was Manager of the Band of Hope and Albion, with a house in Darling Street, Ballarat.
He was elected to the District of Ballarat West in 1859.[3]
In the 1880’s Serjeant was living at Yarrowee Pde, Ballarat.[4]
