Phillip Gay was residing at Ballarat when he signed the Benden Hassell Petition in 1856.[2]
He was a successful mining speculator at the time of his death.[3]
Obituary
- To-day the will of the late Phillip Gay, of Sturt-street, Ballarat, mining investor, was lodged for probate. The testator died on the 23rd of January last, leaving a will dated 22nd September, 1900. The estate is valued at £6189/11/5, and consists of £5515/15 realty and personalty £913/11/5. He leaves his property to his sons, Robert, Phillip, John Augustus, Harold, and James B.[4]

- A meeting of persons favorable to the formation of a cricket club which will have as its headquarters the Western Recreation Reserve in Eyre street, was held at Gay's Pacific Hotel last night. Mr Phillip Gay - presided. Only a few persons were present, and after a discussion regarding preliminaries the meeting adjourned to a future date."[5]
