- Mrs. Martha Mitchell, of 29 Douglas street Toorak, whose death occurred last week, was born in the early forties in a cottage at the corner of Russell and Little Collins streets, and was a daughter of one of the pioneers whose remains were recently transferred from the old cemetery to Fawkner. Her father was Mr. Robert Sawyers. and her first husband was Mr Peter Smith, who led the police at the Eureka Stockade. Into his hands fell the flag that the miners placed over the stockade. His wife had it in her possession for a number of years, but souvenir hunters destroyed it by cutting pieces from it. Mrs. Mitchell saw Melbourne grow from a village. One of Mrs Mitchell's latest acts was to give three guineas towards the erection of the old pioneers' memorial on Flagstaff Hill.[1]
