Background

Patrick O’Day was born around 1821[1] in Ballingary, Tipperary, Ireland and was in the British Army. He married Maria Wall on 15 1854 at St Mary's Church, Geelong, Victoria. At the time they were residing at Little Scotland.[2] Patrick O’Day died in May 1906 and was buried at the Ballaarat New Cemetery from his residence in Humffray Street.[3]

O’Day was a baker[4] who trained the pikemen at the Eureka Stockade but was absent during the battle on 3 December 1854 as his wife was due to give birth to their son, William O'Day who was born on 9 December 1854 at Ballarat. Maria was attended by Dr Stewart, but the birth was registered months later on 21 August 1855. [5] The information that William was born at Ballarat in 1855 is incorrect, but this is the date the birth was registered. [6]

O'Day became a businessman, being a baker and publican. [7]

Obituary

EGERTON.- Mr. Patrick O'Day, an old colonist, died on Saturday, in his 85th year.[8]


The death has occurred at the age of 85 years of Mr Patrick O'Day, one of the few remaining pioneers of Ballarat. Deceased, who for many years carried on business as a baker at Brown Hill, was the father of C. O'Day, of the Bungaree shire.[9]
