Background

Patrick Daniel Howard was born c1828,[1] and was raised in the seaside village of Balldoyle, County Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Daniel Howard and Mary Anne Dunne. Patrick arrived in Victoria in 1845. He married Eliza D'Arcy from County Clare, Ireland in 1855 at Geelong, and they had twelve children. Their daughter, Alicia, was named after Alicia Lalor (nee Dunne).[2]

In 1840 numerous Howards, including Daniel, from Baldoyle and surrounds were listed as supporters of the Loyal National Repeal Association, a grassroots political movement which campaigned for the repeal of the Act of Union of 1800 between Great Britain and Ireland.[3]

Patrick immigrated to Australia, probably on the Carpentaria which departed Liverpool England 12-13 May 1854 and arrived in Melbourne Australia 1-2 Aug 1854. [4] He married Eliza D'Arcy (daughter of Cornelius D'Arcy and Mary McEnertney)[5] in 1855 at St Alipius’ Catholic Church, Ballarat East. Patrick was listed as a 27 year old bachelor and gold digger from County Dublin.[6] Eliza was born c1836 at Newmarket, County Clare. They had 12 children. [7] At the marriage Patrick signed his name and Eliza made her mark. The marriage was witnessed by Patrick McCarthy and Mary McCarthy.[8]

Patrick Howard died at Birragurrra on 05 July 1900 and was buried in the Irrewarra Cemetery on 07 July.[9] Eliza died 22 August 1920 in Geelong, Victoria.[10]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

According to Howard family oral history Patrick Howard helped to design the Eureka Flag and his wife Eliza helped to sew the Flag.[11]

Patrick Howard was a miner and was arrested on 03 December 1854 after the storming of the Eureka Stockade. He was subsequently released by the authorities without being charged in 1856.[12]

Along with Jacob Sorenson and William Molloy, Howard was charged with “divert other false traitors at present unknown, fire upon, attack and kill certain troops of our Sovereign Lady the Queen” on 9 December 1854. James Louge of the 40th Regiment was a witness against Jacob Sorenson, William Molloy and Patrick Howard and said “I belong to the party at the attack on the 3rd Inst. I was close when Captain Wise fell. I saw the prisoner Howard by a tent where a lot of men where standing. He was facing a little to the right. I fired at the mob but not at him.”[13]

1854 Patrick was arrested and charged with treason after the Eureka Stockade battle on Sunday 03 December 1854. The charge details were as follows:

Colony of Victoria, Ballarat
… taken on oath this ninth day of December, in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four at Ballarat in the Colony aforesaid, before the undersigned one of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said Colony, in the presence and hearing of William Molloy, Jacob Sorenson and Patrick Howard who are charged this day before me for that they on the third day of December 1854 at Ballarat in the said Colony did with diverse other false traitors at present unknown fire upon, attack and kill certain troops of our Sovereign Lady the Queen.
Deposition: And this deponent James Lough on his oath saith I belonged to the party at the attack on the 3rd Inst. I was close when Captain Wise fell – I saw prisoner Howard by a tent where a lot of men were standing. He was facing a little to the right – I fired at the mob but not at him.[14]

The Argus ‘Special Correspondent’ reported from Ballarat:

In the Police Court yesterday [Saturday 9 December] … Patrick Howard [was] brought up. James Lough saw several men in the stockade near the guard-tent. They were armed with pikes and guns. Saw Howard fire. Was about to fire at him, but fired at a much larger mob. … Patrick Howard was discharged, but told that he had had a narrow escape.[15]

Post 1854 Experiences

Howard at Ballarat, and was recorded on the 1855 Electoral Roll, under the electoral qualification of Miner’s Right. [16]

On 23 October, Patrick and five partners (including Patrick McCarthy) discovered a 263 ounce gold nugget at Brown’s Diggings, and on the next day a 30 ounce nugget. The large nugget was sold for £1022.26.[17]

Reminiscences

Leo Howard, grandson of Patrick Howard, attended the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade in 2004 in memory of his grandfather, who was arrested after the Eureka Stockade battle, but was released without going to trial. According to Leo Howard "A trooper took his musket up to fire at my grandfather Patrick as he stood outside his tent in the early hours of the morning. Patrick leapt for his gun but fortunately for him, and possibly for me, there was a body of diggers who burst out of the tent that he slept in. The trooper fired at the men as they burst out but Patrick couldn't fire because he had no powder in his gun.[18]

And in 2006:

When troopers stormed towards the tents of the diggers on [[Bakery Hill],] Patrick, on the lookout and armed, warned the miners. He saw the troopers coming with their white and red coats and he sang out, ‘They're here!’ The miners came out of the tents and a trooper, who had a gun pointed at my grandfather, was distracted and turned and fired at the other miners.[19]
