Background
(Possibly also known as Eureka Nancy) Nancy Quinane was born on 6 June 1830, Upperchurch, Tipperary, Ireland. She married Matthew Ryan who died in 1870, and Nancy later married Archibald McAuley. Her daughter, Anastasia, was baptised at St Alipius, Ballarat on 16 September 1855. The sponsors were Patrick and Mary Quinane. Mary (Ryan) and Patrick Quinane had a son, Patrick, baptised at St Alipius on 4 October 1854. The sponsors were Matthew and Nancy Ryan (nee Quinane). Nancy was present during the Eureka battle, and was said to have looked after the children. She assisted in the amputation of Lalor’s arm, and named her first daughter Anastasia, possibly after Anastasia Hayes. She died at the Camp Hotel, Learmonth, in 1901 aged 68, and is buried at Dowling Forest.
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Nancy was present during the Eureka Stockade battle. There was a National School tent within the stockade with an enrolment of 40 children, Nancy is said to have looked after the children during the battle. Nancy Quinane assisted in the amputation of Peter Lalor's arm.
- Another old identity has passed away at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr James Hart, Hill street, Ballarat, in the person of Mrs Harrington relict of Mr Timothy Harrington, of Yendon, at the advanced age of 87. The deceased lady, was a teacher in the first National school in Ballarat, which position she afterwards resigned to be come head teacher of St. Alipius’ Roman Catholic school. To the last she had a vivid recollection of the stirring days of the early fifties. She went through the Eureka Stockade on the morning of the riot with the late Rev. Father Smythe and the late Mrs MacCauley, of Learmonth, to succor the wounded. The deceased, who was of a kindly, charitable disposition, and much respected, leaves a family of four. The remains were interred in the Buninyong Cemetery."[1]
