Background
(Possibly also known as Eureka Nancy) Nancy Quinane was born on 6 June 1830, Upperchurch, Tipperary, Ireland. She married Matthew Ryan who died in 1870, and Nancy later married Archibald McAuley. Her daughter, Anastasia, was baptised at St Alipius, Ballarat on 16 September 1855. The sponsors were Patrick and Mary Quinane. Mary (Ryan) and Patrick Quinane had a son, Patrick, baptised at St Alipius on 4 October 1854. The sponsors were Matthew and Nancy Ryan (nee Quinane). Nancy was present during the Eureka battle, and was said to have looked after the children. She assisted in the amputation of Lalor’s arm, and named her first daughter Anastasia, possibly after Anastasia Hayes. Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Nancy was present during the Eureka Stockade battle. There was a National School tent within the stockade with an enrolment of 40 children, Nancy is said to have looked after the children during the battle. Nancy Quinane assisted in the amputation of Peter Lalor's arm.
