Background
Morgan Lee was from Galway, Ireland[1] on 25 March 1811. After the tragic loss of his wife and child during the 1840s Irish potato famine, Morgan Lee came to Australia.[2]

He died on 16 June 1883 and is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. A gravestone was first placed on his grave in February 2016. His epitaph ends with “At rest beneath the South Cross.” [3]

- Old Ballaratians will remember Morgan Lee, of Band of Hope, Hand and Band, and other mining companies. He is old now and cold (pecuniarily), and has turned publican, whereby to warm his remaining days. Not many years ago he had thousands in the bank and other moneys at usance. One of his borrowers died, and Morgan took the widow to wife, and so re deemed the mortgage for the dead man.[5]
