Post 1854 Experiences

Obituary

The funeral of Michael Callinan, accidentally killed on Thursday at the Band of Hope Company's No. 2 shaft, took place on Saturday, and was remarkable as having been the most numerously attended of any private funeral in this district. The deceased was 38 years of age and was a native of Ennistamon, County Clare, Ireland, and had resided in this district since 1853. In the early , days of gold digging here, when rough methods of settling disputes arose, Mr Callinan quelled many a disturbance, as he had a great deal of influence over his countrymen. He fought with the diggers at Eureka, and was wounded there on that eventful Sunday morning in 1854. The funeral procession reached the whole way from Armstrong street to the ceme-terv. Several hundred men followed the hearse on foot, 107 vehicles followed, and nearly 200 horsemen brought up the rear. The directors and manager of the Band of Hope Company attended."[4]
