Background

Matthew Ryan was thought to be married to Nancy/Ann Quinane although no marriage certificate has yet been found.

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Matthew Ryan was a miner at Ballarat and put in a claim for 60 pounds compensation resulting in the loss of his tent during the storming of the Eureka Stockade on 03 December 1854. J.B. Humffray was a witness to the claim.[1] Ryan said his tent was inside the stockade.

Ryan petitioned the government:

That on Sunday morning the third day of December last my tent with all the property therein to the value of sixty pounds was set on fire to and destroyed immediately after the attack of the Military and Police on the Stockade at Eureka aforesaid thereby causing extreme hardship and suffering to your Petitioner and his helpless family.

That your Petitioner too no part in the Riot directly or indirectly which has already been declared before the Gold Fields Commission.

Your Petitioner therefore humbly prays Your Excellency to grant him compensation for the loss of his property.

And your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray.
