Background
Julia Ford Hanmer was born in 1840 at Whitehall, Westminster. The daughter of Ballarat actress Sarah Hanmer and accountant Frederick Ford, her parents never married.[1] When Julia's mother married Comedian Henry Augustus Leicester Hanmer in 1844 the young child became known as Julia Ford Hanmer. [3]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Julia would have been living with her mother, Sarah Hanmer during the Eureka days, and is believed to have assisted in James McGill's daring post Eureka Stockade escape to Smeaton wearing women's clothes supplied by Julia's mother.

She married William Surplice on 08 December 1856 at Ballarat. William and Julia's son, Arthur Stanley Lowe Surplice was born on 14 June 1859 at Ballarat (married Emily Jane Grant daughter Of Capt John Grant Bega. Died 10/9/1906, Waverley).[2]
