Background

Julia Ford Hanmer, the daughter of Ballarat actress Sarah Hanmer , was born on .

She married William Surplice on 08 December 1856 at Ballarat. William and Julia's son, Arthur Stanley Lowe Surplice was born on 14 June 1859 at Ballarat (married Emily Jane Grant daughter Of Capt John Grant Bega. Died 10/9/1906, Waverley).[1]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

Julia would have been living with her mother, Sarah Hanmer during the Eureka days, and may have assisted to dress James McGill in women's clothing for his daring post Eureka Stockade escape to Smeaton with Julia's mother, Sarah Hanmer.

Post 1854 Experiences

Julia and William Surplice and their family spent some time in Fiji[2] before moving to Woollahra, New South Wales in the mid-1870s.[3]
