Background

John McNeil was a Sergeant in the British Army who was involved in the storming of the Eureka Stockade.[1]

Goldfields Involvement, 1854

McNeil witnessed the Ballarat Reform League meeting on Bakery Hill when Peter Lalor swore the diggers oath. According to his account McNeil witnessed Robert McCandlish unbutton his coat and unfurl a light blue flag with some stars on it, but no cross. When McNeil viewed the flag at the Art Gallery of Ballarat he stated he had never seen it before.[2]

In 1896 McNeil stated that he had torn down the Eureka Flag which he had torn up at the Spencer Street Barracks after the Eureka battle.[3]

Post 1854 Experiences

In 1896 John McNeil was living at 120 Victoria Street, Ballarat East.[4] 238 245
