According to his account McNeil witnessed [[Robert McCandlish]] unbutton his coat and unfurl a light blue flag with some stars on it, but no cross. Background

John McNeil was a Sergeant in the British Army who was involved in the storming of the Eureka Stockade.[1]

McNeil witnessed the Ballarat Reform League meeting on Bakery Hill when Peter Lalor swore the diggers oath. According to his account McNeil witnessed Robert McCandlish unbutton his coat and unfurl a light blue flag with some stars on it, but no cross. When McNeil viewed the flag at the Art Gallery of Ballarat he stated he had never seen it before.[2]

In 1896 McNeil stated that he had torn down the Eureka Flag which he had torn up at the Spencer Street Barracks after the Eureka battle.[3]

In 1896 John McNeil was living at 120 Victoria Street, Ballarat East.[4]
