John Greig

Background
Greig was born in 1849 at Kilkady, Fifeshire, Scotland. He sailed to Sydney on the Agenora with his wife, Margaret, and four children. Greig worked as a baker in Sydney, where he left his family in 1852/3 in the search for gold at Ballarat. He pitched his tent on the hill which became known as the Free Trade Hill, Specimen Creek. Today it is Rodier St, Ballarat. His family followed him in 1854. The family’s tent became a house and is now 19 Rodier St. Greig may have been an acquaintance of James Bentley as he possibly signed his application to a license at the Eureka Hotel.[1]
Greig was a storeowner at the Ballarat township with Hilfling. [2]
John Greig died at his home in 1881, aged 66. [3]
Goldfields Involvement, 1854
Post 1854 Experiences
Greig lived at Ballarat, and was recorded on the 1855 Electoral Roll, under the electoral qualification of Freehold. Grieg signed a Petition of householders of Ballaarat requesting the establishment of a Municipality in 1855.[4]
