Background
Greig was born in 1849 at Kilkady, Fifeshire, Scotland. He sailed to Sydney on the Agenora with his wife, Margaret, and four children. Greig worked as a baker in Sydney, where he left his family in 1852/3 in the search for gold at Ballarat. He pitched his tent on the hill which became known as the Free Trade Hill, Specimen Creek.
