James Merriman was born on 17 July 1814 at Lockington (on shipping it records Hemmington), Leicestershire to Hugh and Catherine. Both James and Ann were Church of England faith and could both read and write. Ann was born 1821 in Oakthorpe, Derbyshire to Samuel and Ann Plummer. James and Ann were married on 25 December 1844 at Church-Gresley, Derbyshire, England. On the marriage certificate he described himself as a collier. They were both of Church-Gresley. The father of James, Hugh Merriman, was a weaver, and the father of Ann, Solomon Plummer, was a cordwainer. They were married by G. W. Floyd. Witnesses were Charles Allsop and Jane Kiddimaster. All were illiterate. James Merriman? died in the infirmary September 24-25 1855 aged 44 years. He was a bricklayer. Ann’s father was Solomon Plummer born 25 Feb 1786 Cromwell, Newark, Nottinghamshire; married Ann Wyatt in Stretton en le Field, Swadlincote, Leicestershire or Derbyshire (1841 Census). Ann born 1822. Her father remarried to Mary Kittermaster. He died around 1861 in Staffordshire.”
